With the newly legalized cannabis industry, one this is clear – there is a need for education and training for those who want to go into the industry. While there are some who have – ahem, experience – with cannabis, it’s not usually something they can put on a resume, unless it is from the legal medical marijuana industry. Unfortunately, the growing industry requires a growing staff both for current businesses and the ones that have yet to open their doors.

The biggest problem? A shortage of qualified workers.

“As we continue our growth, it’s essential to find candidates and employees with industry-specific knowledge,” Mark Zekulin, president of Canopy Growth said in a statement regarding the partnership.

As a solution to this problem, at least Niagra College in Ontario, Canada has announced their cannabis production program – designed to prepare students for careers in the newly legal cannabis industry. The program will include classes on plant nutrition, crop health, pest management and proper lighting, among other industry specific business needs like meeting quality and packaging requirements.

It is expected that the course would be a one-year term for post-graduate students, and tuition would cost roughly $12,000 in total. Classes will be held in modified, climate-controlled sipping containers, which are conductive to marijuana growth.

“Licensed producers came up to me and said, ’We [have] to train people. We don’t have people with the skillset to really take cannabis and grow it to a large, technical size,” he said. “The demand from the industry is why we decided to do it.”

Those who are looking to enter the cannabis industry and want to be able to prove their experience legitimately now have a way to go about doing so. For those who want to work directly with the plants, this is a perfect introduction course that would cover all the most important aspects of cannabis cultivation, and the tricky in’s and out’s of the new industry’s regulations.
