The Empire State Could be the Second Biggest Cannabis Market
Over the past several years, the legalization of cannabis in states across the United States and in countries around the world has been happening at a fairly fast rate. This has been shown to be good news for those locations who have allowed for medical use, as well as recreational use. Now, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York put his full support into legalizing the use of recreational marijuana.
This is a very big change, and it was only about a year ago that people will remember Cuomo calling marijuana a gateway drug. According to a press conference, he said that he has changed his mind on legalizing recreational marijuana because he wanted to end unfairness in the legal system. He said, “We must end the needless and unjust convictions and the debilitating criminal stigma and let’s legalize the adult recreational use of marijuana once and for all.”
Of course, that might just be one of the reasons that he has changed his mind. Most of the other states around New York have legalized marijuana, including Vermont and Massachusetts. New Jersey will be legalizing in 2019, and Canada now has legal cannabis. Even if New York didn’t change its tune on marijuana, New Yorkers would be able to take a short drive to get what they needed.
Even more importantly, at least in the minds of most politicians, is the fact that this would mean that the state would not be able to tax any money on sales of cannabis. Earlier in 2018, the state put out a report that found they could generate around $700 billion in taxes while reducing costs of marijuana law enforcement.
Regardless of the reasons, this is big news and hopefully the state does push ahead and make the change to their laws.
